The SA Sports Awards were held last night at the Sandton Convention Centre and here is a list of all the winners, the nominees and for some of the awards, the Jabu Pick. I am specifically only commenting on the winners and not on the?occurrences?that have got social media abuzz.?
Sports Star of the Year
Winner: Chad le Clos
Nominees: Hashim Amla (Cricket); Natalie du Toit (Swimming); Oscar Pistorius (Athletics); Chad le Clos (Swimming); Vernon Philander (Cricket); Siyabonga Nomvete (Soccer); Caster Semenya (Athletics)
Jabu Pick: I am happy with Chad winning this one, it was well deserved, I would, however, liked to have seen Ernie Els (Open Champion) and Cameron van der Burgh (Olympic Gold) nominated for this.
Sportsman of the Year
Winner: Vernon Philander
Nominees: Chad le Clos (Swimming); Cameron van der Burgh (Swimming); Vernon Philander (Cricket); Hashim Amla (Cricket); Siyabonga Nomvete (Football)
Jabu Pick: I think I speak for all of twitter when I say this, but aweh! Vernon has been incredible this year and I am very happy with it!
Sportswoman of the Year
Winner: Caster Semenya
Nominees: Marsha Marescia (Hockey); Caster Semenya (Athletics); Bridgette Hartley (Canoeing); Chantelle Doddermeade (Judo); Portia Modise (Football)
Jabu?s pick: If the excitement around her first round run at the Olympics was anything to go by, there was never any doubting this. Of course I have a soft sport for Bridgitte as a friend of All Things Jabu
Coach of the Year
Winner: Joseph Mkhonza
Nominees: Gary Kirsten (Cricket); Joseph Mkhonza (Football); Alliaster Coetzee (Rugby); Graham Hill (Swimming); Gordon Igusend (Football)
Jabu?s Pick: Well this was a very strange decision for me, there surely could only have been one winner in Graham Hill. Swimming picked up 3 of our medals at the Olympics and made numerous finals. Im not sure how getting hammered at the Olympics in comparison equates to coach of the year!
Sportswoman of the Year with Disability
Winner: Natalie du Toit
Nominees: Natalie du Toit (Swimming); Kgothatso Montjane (Tennis); Isle Hayes (Athletics); Zandile Nhlapo (Athlete); IIise Carstens (Athlete)
?Jabu?s Pick: Well it had to be Natalie, it was her last games and she delivered once again with 3 golds and 1 silver. This took her career Paralympics haul to 13 golds and 2 silvers.
Sportsman of the Year with Disability
Winner: Oscar Pistorius
Nominees: Oscar Pistorius (Athletics); Charl Bouwer (Swimming); Samkelo Radebe (Athletics); Lucas Sithole (Wheelchair Tennis); Arno Fourie (Athletics)
Jabu?s Pick: I think that this was never in doubt. All 5 nominees are winners for sure, but Oscar is Oscar and being Oscar is incredible
Federation of the Year
Winner: Rowing South Africa
Nominees: Swimming South Africa; Rowing South Africa and South African Hockey Association
Jabu?s Pick: Its not often in South Africa that we have three federations who are all deserving of the award. I cant fault the choice of Rowing SA although possibly with a bit of bias, I had vied for Hockey SA.
Team of the Year
Winner: Rowing ? The Oarsome Foursome
Nominees: Rowing (Men?s Lightweight 4); The Proteas and Swimming (London 2012 Olympic Team); Orlando Pirate FC; Banyana Banyana
Jabu?s Pick: Surely there was no competition here even. In an Olympic year, a team of underdogs won the gold in the most thrilling race I have ever watched! They are well and deserving of the Team of the Year.
Administrator of the Year
Winner: Wimpie du Plessis
Nominees: Dr. Debbie Alexander (Triathlon); Wimpie du Plessis (Rowing); Dr. Kgotso Ncholo (Softball)
Jabu?s Pick: I think this award was indicative of their success, I don?t know much about softball, but the rowing performance outshone that of Kate Roberts and Richard Murray at the Olympics and that probably assists in this award.
Newcomer of the Year
Winner: Siya Kolisi
Nominees: Michelle Webber (Swimming); Richard Murray (Triathlon); Siya Kolisi (Rugby)
Jabu?s Pick: We can all see it, so hopefully Heyneke will start to see it if Siya stays fit!
Volunteer of the Year
Winner: Sondiso Magajana
Nominees: Sondiso Magajana (Judo); Laetitia Goldman (Hockey); Elias Mpende (Boxing)
