A former Dorchester newspaper publisher and activist is the first to throw his hat in the ring to challenge Thomas M. Menino, should the five-term mayor seek an unprecedented sixth term next year.
Will Dorcena is officially kicking off his campaign tomorrow at Phillip?s Old Colony House in Dorchester.
?Too many youth are gunned down on our streets, Boston Public Schools? leadership must be held accountable for our students, and we must fight for the jobs that evade Boston residents,? Dorcena said in a statement formally announcing his candidacy for mayor. ?We will win the future for our city only when we put the people?s interest first.?
Dorcena is a graduate of Boston College High School and Boston College and has a master?s degree in business from Babson College. He was the publisher of the monthly Boston Haitian Reporter newspaper and lives in Hyde Park with his wife and daughter.
Dorcena made an unsuccessful run for City Council in 2011. His state campaign account contains just $170, records show.
A Menino spokeswoman said yesterday that the mayor has not made a decision on his political future. Menino has been hospitalized since Oct. 26 for a blood clot and a flu-like virus and is now recovering from a fractured vertebrae he sustained in the hospital.
