Many diabetics learn about diabetes after many years of the disease. The reason for being unaware of diabetes is the lack of know-how of the symptoms, which are subtle in the initial stages.
The common symptoms of diabetes are listed below:
- Increased Hunger: Individuals succumbing to diabetes start eating more than usual and become hungry more often. Their body fails to use the glucose in the blood (as the insulin in the body is not working well). Because of this, cells of the body that lack in energy makes individual feel hungry more frequently.
- Increased Thirst and Frequent Urination: Besides increase in hunger, diabetics feel like going to the toilet more often and are always thirsty. Increase in blood sugar levels make fluids overflow from cells, only to make one thirsty. As a result of increased thirst, one's tendency to drink more water increase which in turn leads to frequent urination.
- Weight Gain: Most of the diabetes symptoms are related. Weight gain, one of the common signs of diabetes, is a consequence of increased hunger and frequent eating. In case of type 1 diabetes, body loses the ability to use glucose. This leads to fat and muscle break down, which causes loss of weight.
- Fatigue and Irritability: In diabetes, cells starve of energy despite of ample glucose in the blood. As cells don't get essential energy, diabetics feel tired and fatigued. As a result of feeling tired and fatigued, diabetics may become irritated.
- Slow-healing and frequent infections: Cuts and bruises take much long to heal, as increase in blood sugar (glucose) level impairs the ability of your body to heal. Owing to this, diabetics may have frequent infections (yeast and candida). In women, the risk of incidence of bladder and vaginal infections increases considerably.
- Numbness or tingling of limbs: Tingling of hands and feet is due to the damage to the nerves owing to high blood sugar level.
- Vision Problems: Dehydration due to high glucose levels may affect the eyes. Diabetics may have vision problems such as drying of lenses and blurred vision. Uncontrolled or untreated diabetes may even lead to blindness.
- Sexual problems among men: Men having surpassed 50 years of age may experience sex problems such as erectile dysfunction.
- If a diabetic is hyperglycaemic: If there is too much sugar in the blood, the common symptoms of diabetes include dehydration, difficulty in breathing, confusion, giddiness on standing, loss of consciousness or coma and drowsiness.
