COSTA MESA, Calif. (KTLA) ? Police in Costa Mesa are searching for a man who broke into a house and sexually assaulted a teenage girl.
It happened at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday at an apartment at Valencia Street and LaSalle Avenue.
The family says they had been out for the evening. They returned home, and their 18-year-old daughter went upstairs.
She says that?s where the suspect was waiting in her bathroom.
According to the victim, the suspect told her not to scream, and he sexually assaulted her before fleeing through a window.
He left behind a seven-inch steak knife that investigators recovered, according to police.
When the man released her, she immediately ran downstairs to where her family was.
?All of the sudden I see my daughter running downstairs and telling me there?s a guy. He tried to rape me, he pulled his pants down,? the father told KTLA.
?She?s really scared, she?s really traumatized, and she has not stopped crying all day now,? he said.
The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with a thin build and wearing a hoodie.
Around 2 a.m. Thursday morning, a man fitting the description was spotted nearby. He was chased off by an area resident.
Investigators also say that, on January 27, a very similar attack took place in the same neighborhood. The victim was a woman in her 30s.
Anyone with information or who sees any suspicious activity is asked to call police at (714) 754-5252.
